JML is pleased to announce that Johanna Stein has joined the firm’s family law practice.  Johanna was called to the BC Bar in 2011 after clerking with the Supreme Court of British Columbia.  She has practiced exclusively in the area of family law since 2012.

Dinyar Marzban, QC, and Scott Booth have been recognized among the top family law volunteers in CLEBC’s Most Prolific Volunteers: 1996 to 2016 – with Dinyar in the top 10 and Scott in the top 20 for all lawyers and practice areas in the Province over the last 20 years. Dinyar Marzban, QC been appointed by the Law Society of British Columbia to the Board of Directors of the Legal Services Society. The Legal Services Society is a non-profit organization created by the Legal Services Society Act in 1979 to provide legal information, advice, and representation services to people with low incomes.

Grace Choi has been appointed Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.)

JML is pleased to announce that Grace Choi, a senior member of the firm’s Family Law practice group, has been appointed Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.).

Ms. Choi was one of 32 BC lawyers honoured for exceptional merit and her contributions to the legal profession. Announcing the Q.C. honorees, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton thanked  ”. . . this year’s Q.C. recipients for their contributions to our communities, our justice system and our province.”

Preparing for the new Family Law Act

In recent months, the family law Lawyers at JML have been busy preparing for the introduction of the new Family Law Act on March 18, 2013.  Scott Booth has presented 7 times to Continuing Legal Education audiences and for the Pacific Business and Law Institute on topics ranging from excluded property, treatment of trusts, and the status of family law agreements under the new legislation. Theresa Stowe has presented for CLE and written a paper on property issues.  Dinyar Marzban, Q.C., delivered an overview of the property provisions of the new Family Law Act to Supreme Court Judges in January 2013.  JML is working to ensure its clients receive sound and informed advice on this significant change in the law.
