JML has filled its 2023-2024 articling positions. We will follow the VBA Guidelines for the 2024 summer student and 2024-2015 articling student recruitment cycles. UBC Law students may apply through the OCI process. Students from all other law schools may submit application materials (cover letter, CV, and undergraduate and law school transcripts) via email to vwerden@jml.ca.

Student Program

At JML, students have an opportunity to contribute and collaborate with our lawyers on family, construction and commercial matters. Summer or articling experiences may include preparing opinions, drafting court documents, and accompanying lawyers to hearings, mediations, and examinations. Those invited to join us are encouraged to seek out work that interests them.

To foster future private practice success, students are assigned a principal and mentor who serve to provide quality of work and guidance to see that strong skills and sound legal reasoning are cultivated. Students are given regular feedback, and at the end of the summer, evaluated and considered for articles.

We hire problem solvers who will rise to the challenge of resolving complex legal issues. We look for intelligence, enthusiasm and motivation. Those who strive for excellence and thrive at working both independently and collectively do well with us.

“I had a great articling experience at JML. I gained exposure to many different areas of construction law, general commercial litigation, and family law. I felt challenged by the work, while still supported. The atmosphere is friendly and collegial—lawyers and staff were always willing to take time to answer questions. I had outstanding mentorship and received ample feedback on my work over the course of my articles. I particularly appreciated that many lawyers shared high-level considerations with me, including those related to strategy, client management, practice management, and ethics.”
